Big UK Flickr Meet #3 – Nottingham

Flickr Meet #3 – Nottingham, originally uploaded by CraigMarston.

This event turned out very well. The weather looked like it would rain, but it just remained overcast. Everyone I spoke to during the day said they were really enjoying themselves, and indeed, there were a large number of poeple left when we arrived at the final pub around 5:30pm.

We met at 10AM, and went straight in to the Council House on the Old Market Square in Nottingham. That was fascinating. I had no idea that place was so extensive. 58 people signed in to look around which gives us some idea of final numbers for the event – some people turned up later as well.

We had a rather long lunchtime break in the Pitcher & Piano pub which used to be a church and after everyone going off exploring in little groups met up at the Castle to do some group shots and have a look around.

From the Castle, we had a ride on an old Routemaster bus around the city and then on to another pub. That bus ride was fun with everyone still in high sprits.

It just goes to show that despite not being warm and sunny, these things can be great days out.

There are already a few hundred photos on Flickr from the event and I expect there to be hundreds more. All of them can be seen here.

Left Lion photographs from the Nottingham Flickr Group

    Left Lion April/May 2008

Issue 22 of LeftLion contains a gallery page of pictures taken by members of the Nottingham Flickr Group. They have a PDF version of this issue for download on their website if you fancy a browse – and I would do, considering this is a free magazine it’s very professionally done and you can tell a lot of love and hard work goes in to it.

The photo of mine that appears is this one of the Nottingham Eye:

    Class struggle

I look up to him because he is upper-class

I saw this sight in Nottingham today and all I could think of was "I look up to him because he is upper-class"

I can’t find the original sketch in full, but this video is reminder enough.

    Nottingham Eye

    Nottingham Eye [123/365]

I took a few photos of the Nottingham Eye when I visited Nottingham for Light Night. Those first photos were taken at night and I’ve been meaning to get back to Nottingham to take some in the day time. I was there today but it was freezing cold and a bit foggy. Nevertheless, I did take a few photos including this fisheye photo above. Hopefully I’ll be in Nottingham on a clear sunny day before it disappears next month.

    Don't look down

    Nottingham Tram Tour Flickrmeet

    Gurner

You can see everyone’s pictures here.

The plan was to take a tour around the tram network, getting off at various stops and going for a wander around taking photos. It rained all day though. Despite the weather, we all had a good laugh and there are some good photos. I think the photos would have been very different had the weather been good.

    Infrared Arboretum

    Arboretum

It was nice to get a bit of sunshine on Sunday after quite an overcast day on Saturday. I was in Nottingham and as it was so nice and sunny I went for a bit of a wander around. The photos above and below were taken in the arboretum with the Canon Ixus 55 and the Hoya R72 infrared filter – both of which were sat on top of the DSLR version of the Gorillapod which keeps it very sturdy indeed. I might grow up one day and start using my proper tripod ;)

    Nottingham Flickrmeet December 2006

Thursday Night was the Nottingham Flickr Group’s last meet-up for the year. Attending were Psycho Crow, Electric Barberellaaustenhaines, frenchyphil, Art Assci (paul), his wife, djp3000 and finally myself!

I didn’t take any photos at all which was a bit of an oversight, so I used one of Austens that has me nearly hiding behind a bottle of Bud further up the table.

This was quite a low key chilled out affair – all of the previous Flickrmeets had been timed to coincide with an event of some sort – this was just a meeting in a pub – the Royal Children in Nottingham – so we sat there, talked and drank. I stopped drinking ‘seriously’ when I was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago. I still have the odd one or two here and there though – in fact Christmas Eve was probably the first time in years where I felt a bit tipsy after a laughably small amount of alcohol!

Due to my car crash before Christmas I was using public transport and had to disappear to get the one bus that I could possibly catch to get home. In a horrible coincidence, one of the other Nottingham Flickrers had a little accident as well. Nobody was hurt again though.

The bus journey was uneventful except for a couple of drunk girls who were in a right mess cackling at the top of their voices.

I’m the same! I’m not a “good” drinker. I’ll have two, and it makes me merry! :-)

Sounds like you had a nice start to 2007. Happy New Year to you, too :-)

    Goose Fair

    Lines and lines and lines

The Ready Brek HouseI went to Goose Fair in Nottingham on Wednesday night with a few people from The Nottingham Group on Flickr. Night time photography is a challenge without a tripod or just having fairly close up shots using the flash. Most of my photos were taken hastily and it showed!

The two pictured here are the two that came out the best I think. Long exposures in both cases.

The first one was taken with me being sat on some steps of a ride opposite, and holding the camera in place on top of my knee during the one second exposure.

The second one was taken from a ferris wheel during a pause when people were getting on and off. This was difficult because the cages did swing around somewhat so we were trying to keep still and not move.

I like the light trails in the first one – I’ve tried before and will try again during the winter. If I can ever get anything half as good as this I’ll be well happy.

    Nottingham Flickrmeet

    Nottingham Flickrmeet - September 2006

Saturday night was Nottingham Flickrmeet night. We met in the Lincolnshire Poacher on Mansfield Road at around 7:30 and generally had a good time and talked toot until late. There were a lot more people in attendance than the Upcoming.org event page suggested and it was good to see the people I’d met at earlier events as well as a number of new faces.

I took a very small number of quite crumby photos but there are plenty of good ones on show in the Nottingham Flickrmeet group pool (which is the source of the mosaic above).

Overall a great night out and a great bunch of people who it’ll be nice to see again.

I still find it funny that computers and the Internet were once accused of producing a nation of white skinned dweebs who never went outdoors has actually become a force to get people out meeting other people – and in this case, none of them turned out to be weirdos!
