    Lomo UK Flickrmeet

    Rutland Arms

The Lomo UK Flickr Group had a flickrmeet yesterday in Sheffield. We met at 1:30 in the Rutland Arms, pictured, somewhat differently coloured, above.

In the spirit of things, I left my Nikon D50 at home and took the Supersampler, Holga and Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim. During the day I used mainly the Supersampler and the Vivitar – both with mostly slide film that I’m going to get cross processed. I did take the modified infrared camera along as well and took a few shots before the meet-up and I also slide my little Ixus in to my trouser pocket and took a few shots with that in the evening – including the one below which I really like…

    Soph + the dying pigeon

It’s probably going to take a while for all of the photos to appear from this event while everybody gets their films developed, but when they’re uploaded, it should be possible to see them all using the upcoming.org tag: upcoming:event=177622

The day itself was great fun, and the group were a good bunch of people making the day a very friendly and relaxed experience. Sheffield was playing host to Chance to Dance and there were several areas of the city given over to dancers of a wide array of styles. I hope between us there are some good shots of them.

It was after 8pm when I eventually got back on the tram to the park and ride on the outskirts of the city and after walking around the city all day it was nice to get home and have that nicely tired feeling you get after a good day out.

I’ll post an update when the film is developed and I’ve uploaded the good stuff (if there is any!)

Great pictures, they make me want to dig up my actionsampler. What kind of film do you use?

    • Roger B. 12:30 pm on May 1, 2007 Permalink | Reply

Interesting effect – reminds me of a video for the Chemical Brothers that I once saw.

    • Tommy 3:52 pm on May 1, 2007 Permalink | Reply

These are excellent. They all look so “American Midwest”.

    • publicenergy 5:05 pm on May 1, 2007 Permalink | Reply

@Anne, get that Actionsampler out! :) The film used was straightforward colour 200 ASA from Klick – each of these three have been manipulated in some way – most of my older Supersampler shots haven’t been, but I just experimented with these.

@Roger – oh yeah, that’s the video for http://director-file.com/gondry/chemical2.html“ rel=”nofollow”>Star Guitar. I’ve got a DVD full of promos directed by Michel Gondry and it’s on there – very entertaining DVD that!

@Tommy – cheers – Yeah, the middle one especially now that you mention it. I don’t really know what possessed me to to take these shots – I definitely need to think less sometimes and just shoot which is what happened here really. Probably a bit reckless considering I’m using film so it’s not “free” like it is with digital!

I like the colour experiments. I dug up some of my old actionsampler shots in the meantime and boy am I going to look if I still have some old film lying around!

I totally need to get me a ride on a train.
These are great and so hectic.

    First Holga Photographs

    Something missing

    Photographers

I posted off my first batch of films to Spectrum Imaging on Wednesday and received the results in the post today. I’m very impressed with the speed of service – not to mention the price!

My first batch of films consisted of two black and white Ilford XP2’s, two Fuji Velvia slide films for cross processing and a Fuji Superia standard colour film. They were all developed and scanned and put on to a single CD. The Superia shots seem a bit flat and boring – some of the supersampler shots that I took using a Agfa film from Klick (which was stupidly cheap!) looked much better. The performance of that film could have been down to the weather that day though (not sunny at all) so I shouldn’t really write it off.

Even though I love how cross processed images look, my favourite shots out of this first batch are the black and white ones.

The first set can be found here: My Holga photoset on Flickr

      …and I love the cross-processed shots more :) They’re great!

Triffic set of shots all round. Again. Darn you.

    Supersampler Film No 1

    Newark Northgate

    Supersampler Flickr Set

I’ve had some great fun with the Supersampler so far. You do get some strange looks when you’re spotted in public with a blue rubber camera pulling a cord out of it in the same way as those old talking dolls from years ago (not that I ever had one!).

I got the film developed earlier today and Boots also did a set developed as black and white for me because they thought that the originals looked wrong! I suppose that not only was each picture split in to 4, which is probably quite rare, I had also used slide film and asked them to develop it as normal colour. After finishing the first film, I went to work on the next one and have a full black and white film ready to develop. Although I have a thing about black and white, I am going to experiment with different colour films. I’ve seen some shots on Flickr taken with a Supersampler using normal colour film and they’re quite impressive.

    Lomo Supersampler

    Testing Testing Testing Testing

The Supersampler arrived pretty quickly, it was only Friday when I mentioned it in the Absolut Lomo post. I must say that it was very nicely packaged. The very retro looking plastic box contained the camera, a 36 exposure colour film, the manual and a lovely book containing photos taken with the camera. The packaging has already endeared me to the camera before I have even started using it.

I’ve not used a film camera since the early 90’s so it was a bit strange loading a film in to this – so strange that I made a complete hash of the first one, damaging it! I did buy a selection of films to use with this so I had spares to play with and my second attempt went smoothly. It’s going to be interesting using this – I am so much a digital person, it’s going to be weird for me having to wait to get the film developed rather than seeing the photos immediately.

I’m out walking tomorrow and cycling the day after so I’ll take this out with me to use and hopefully have a film developed for the weekend.

My Lomo Super sampler just arrived. I love the packaging. Very nice touch. I’ve not loaded my film yet as the sky is so cloudy. I can’t wait to experiment with it.

    Absolut Lomo

    Absolutlomo

    Short version:

    Win an Absolut Lomo camera.

    Long version:

Absolut, the vodka people from Sweden are running a competition at the moment called Absolut Lomo. I haven’t used a Lomo camera before but I will do shortly because Absolut are sending me two. I intend to have some fun with one of them – I’m definitely a child of the digital age when it comes to cameras so it’ll be a good experience for me. Hopefully I’ll get something that’s worth putting in to the competion.

As for the second camera, that is up for grabs. If you take a shot and submit it to the Absolut gallery, post a link in your comment and I’ll pick my favourite and post the other camera to you. I’ll be posting my efforts at some point as well.

I’ve also ordered a Supersampler from Ebay and will no doubt be posting some of the fruits from that at some point! I was navigating around the wall in the Absolut gallery and there were a few supersampler images on there that I really liked so I decided to take the plunge and give it a go.

Update: The rules for the competition say… “The pictures are taken with a Lomo camera, and/or according to the rules of Lomography.” – so, even if you haven’t got a Lomo camera, you can enter – that being the case that makes my extra one easier to win!

Update: The end date for this will be Sunday 25th February. I’ll choose the winner from the images posted in the comments and contact them to arrange sending the Holga. So, still over a week left!

      FANTASTIC!

I’ve used and abused a few lomos before and they are great, fun, frustrating cameras to use, all at the same time.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with :)

I always seem to learn something new here. I had no idea what lomography was. Very cool!

How did you get them to send you two?

    • publicenergy 6:53 pm on February 5, 2007 Permalink | Reply

An email out of the blue offering them – I imagine they must have been searching Flickr to find me although quite what search criteria they had is anyone’s guess! I was initially suspicious – email and free usually equals danger! We’ll see anyway – if nothing else, it prompted me to order a silly camera from Ebay to have a play with :)

      ey oop fella.

I’ve just been reading the brief for the Absolut competition and it seems to me to insist that the photos should be related, or include, Absolut Vodka.

Maybe I should buy some on the way home ;¬)

There are four categories, only one of which is for the bottle so you don’t have to get completely legless to enter! ;)

[...] There will probably be more shots added to the Flickr Set below when I’ve gone through the rest of them. I’m also sat on an unfinished slide film inside the Supersampler – I’m hoping to finish that off this weekend and then get it developed at some point afterwards – I did have the first few of my films developed at Boots and the results were nice enough but they’re not the cheapest by a long way. I’ve had Spectrum Imaging in Newcastle recommended by a few people and they do seem very good value. So they’re probably going to get my Supersampler films from now on – along with a couple of medium format films out of that Absolut Holga (which you can still win until Sunday night!). [...]
