Alport Castles with Nottingham Flickr Group

    Wet

On Saturday I went for a walk from Fairholmes near Ladybower Reservoir to Alport Castles with some members of the Nottingham Flickr Group. It was pretty wet in the morning – this photo was taken just before lunch when we reached Alport Castles and despite my efforts to keep the lens free of water, I was losing the battle, so this is the result – big blurred spots where the water droplets landed.

On the plus side, it more accurately reflects the conditions!

The day was much harder work for me than normal due to the fact that I had forgotten my walking boots. The footwear I wear most of the rest of the time would have to do – they were classed as walking shoes – and while they are very comfortable for day to day use, the level of grip is tiny compared to good walking boots. As a consequence, the section of the walk that descended down the wet grass from Alport Castles to the valley bellow required a lot more effort and concentration. I’m determined never to forget them again!

More photos from me and the rest of the group here.

Nottingham Flickr Group Magpie Mine & Lathkill Dale Walk

On Saturday I went for a walk with several members of the Nottingham Flickr Group in the Peak District from Over Haddon to Magpie Mine, Monyash and Lathkill Dale.

I was very much enjoying the walk and the chat and didn’t actually take many photos at all. Luckily, the other 9 people took plenty of nice ones. There were a lot more cows than there had been when I’d done this route before – and other members of the group took some great pictures of them – particularly Jon’s photo which comes up first in this slideshow of event photos ordred with the most interesting photos first.

You can browse the photos if you don’t like slideshows: Tagged photos from the walk on Flickr.

Nottingham Flickr Group Peaks Walk 2 – Kinder Scout

    Windmilling

Flickrers let out for the day

Saturday was spent in the Peaks with some of the Nottingham Flickr Group. For me, the walk itself was great fun, good exercise and generally entertaining. The weather was just about overcast and dull all day, so I didn’t find that particularly inspiring as far as taking photos went. I also used too high an ISO for the day so ended up with some fairly noisy photos. I decided to travel light and leave most of my camera gear at home and just take the little Ricoh GX100. The GX100 is a lovely camera but can get quite noisy at higher ISO levels. I have already found through experimentation that I can get away with lower ISO levels in low light thanks to the image stabilization, which is very good. Anyway, the upshot of this was having to use Noise Ninja on the few shots I decided to keep and post to Flickr. Noise Ninja is pretty good and helping out when you’ve made mistakes like this, but is no substitute for doing it right in the first place!

Nottingham Flickr Group Peaks Walk 1

Click on the image above for slideshow. The photos in the slideshow are from everyone involved, not just me – you can click on the photos when they appear to get more info and find the original page should you so wish.

We had planned to go walking on a circular route from Edale on to Kinder Scout. The weather was pretty horrible when we arrived though, so after discussions in the (much improved) cafe near the train station, we decided to do an alternate route with more options for escape should the weather deteriorate further.

So, we headed up to Mam Tor which was enjoying a bit of rain and lots of strong wind, enabling people to lean in to it at some quite impressive angles without falling. From there we went along the ridge, passing Hollin’s Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill before descending in to Hope and catching the train back to Edale.

All along the route, we were either getting blown around and rained on, or enjoying the sunshine and blue skies as the wind moved the weather at speed across the country. The only constant was that Kinder Scout, our original destination, remained engulfed in dark looking storm clouds for most of the day, only clearing in the late afternoon as we returned back to Edale.

Weather like that makes it more interesting – and it certainly makes a nice change not to have just plain grey boring skies. There is something quite nice about walking in rain and wind when you’re wearing things that protect you from it.

I think we’re going to try and do our original route towards the end of next month.

Nottingham Flickr Group trip to Skegness

The Nottingham Flickr Group had a trip to Skegness on Saturday. The weather was fairly grim except for 30 minutes of sunshine in the late afternoon. Photos from everyone involved can be seen here. A few of them should raise a smile or an eyebrow! I had a day of seaside cuisine which luckily I can offset against my new healthy regime – it was one serious blip though! – chips and icecreams seem to be the only thing you can find easily – especially if you don’t look that hard! ;)

Speaking of food, there was this food related photo taken in the train station which I quite like out of my set for the day. I’m a sucker for things like this though. A reflection is a reflection, but when you can factor in some interesting mess, I like that!

    Yorkshire Sculpture Park

I went to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park yesterday with the Leeds Flickr Group. The weather was lovely and hadn’t deteriorated in to typical UK bank holiday cliche weather yet. These days out seem to be more about having a laugh than anything photography related. I’m not quite sure how that happened, but I have yet to meet anyone overly serious at any of these things!

    Predictably, we found some cows:

I’ll leave it at that though!

If I’m honest, sculpture doesn’t do much for me. Most of the time I can appreciate the workmanship and effort involved, but I find it hard to find any other merit in it. It’s probably like anything else though: amongst all of the works on show anywhere, a tiny proportion will have an impact. I have seen sculptures that I really like, just not that many! I think the Buried Statue at Vicar Water is one of my favourites:

Big UK Flickr Meet #3 – Nottingham

Flickr Meet #3 – Nottingham, originally uploaded by CraigMarston.

This event turned out very well. The weather looked like it would rain, but it just remained overcast. Everyone I spoke to during the day said they were really enjoying themselves, and indeed, there were a large number of poeple left when we arrived at the final pub around 5:30pm.

We met at 10AM, and went straight in to the Council House on the Old Market Square in Nottingham. That was fascinating. I had no idea that place was so extensive. 58 people signed in to look around which gives us some idea of final numbers for the event – some people turned up later as well.

We had a rather long lunchtime break in the Pitcher & Piano pub which used to be a church and after everyone going off exploring in little groups met up at the Castle to do some group shots and have a look around.

From the Castle, we had a ride on an old Routemaster bus around the city and then on to another pub. That bus ride was fun with everyone still in high sprits.

It just goes to show that despite not being warm and sunny, these things can be great days out.

There are already a few hundred photos on Flickr from the event and I expect there to be hundreds more. All of them can be seen here.

    Leeds Sheffield Flickrmeet

    Cold start

The Leeds Flickr Group planned a trip to Sheffield. The most relaxing and easy way for me to get to Sheffield is to park at my local train station for a £1 parking fee all day and get the train in for less than a fiver. There was a bit of snow on the ground near home, but more and more of it was to be seen approaching Sheffield. It was cold at 10AM, but the snow was already melting and wasn’t evident for the rest of the day.

Chinese New Year celebrations were occurring in the city and I did get a small number of shots of that, but busy crowd events aren’t really my cup of tea, so my heart wasn’t in it. Instead I just wandered around taking photos of anything that took my fancy. I did get a couple of Dragons however…

I'm assured this one isn't Welsh

Although, if I’m completely honest, I prefer this one (even though the photo isn’t that good…)

    Chinese New Year [106/365]

It’s the only time I’ve approached somebody and asked “Excuse me, can I take a photo of your little dragon?”.

Once the (Chinese) dragon had made it’s journey, we stopped for a coffee before wandering the streets again and making our way to a pub. I’ve posted a handful of photos from the pub, but I think the one below is my favourite. Pictured are members of the Sheffield Flickr Group. It’s blurry and messy, but I like the reflections.

    Some Sheffield Flickrers

Finally, it started getting dark and we headed back to the station. I had nearly half an hour before my train departed so I stopped for a coffee and was amused to see a pigeon fly in to the cafe kitchen unnoticed. I then saw it fly across the doorway at about head height followed by a rather amusing (and rude) exclamation from the staff member inside there.

My Leeds Sheffield Flickrmeet 02/08 set contains more photos from the day.

Afterthought: Whenever I go to Sheffield, I find it hard to resist the big steel balls…

    Playing with the balls (again)
