    White Post Farm

Towards the end of last year, I was asked by White Post Farm to take some photos of their animals for use in their 2010 leaflet. They discovered a set of photos I had taken there last summer when I shared a few of them on their Facebook page. The two photos I shared were these:

Both were taken with a fisheye lens. I think it was the goat photo in particular that caught their attention.

When I made my first visit to take photos specifically for the leaflet, it was dry but overcast and within an hour it started raining. There were some photos I quite liked, but they all looked like a horrible grey day so I wasn’t really happy with them. I went back again in December when I was taking a mid-week day off work in lieu of working the previous weekend. It was a very bright day with blue skies! – That brightness caused it’s own problems, but that was a much nicer problem to deal with than drab grey skies.

One of the photos that was taken on that first visit during the hour before it rained was this one, which ended up being used in the leaflet…

There’s a bit of blue in the sky, but I suppose a lot of the background detail doesn’t matter that much when you’ve got a cheeky llama leaning down in to shot to steal the limelight away from the calf and look straight in to the camera!

The December was where I think I had the time to enjoy the time with the animals and take enough photos in better light.

Here’s the cow nose from the leaflet:

Here’s a few more from the December visit:

There are plenty more on publicenergy.co.uk in the White Post Farm section.

Finally, I visited again yesterday to pick up an annual pass and a copy of the 2010 leaflet, parts of which appear at the top of this post. While I was there I took a few more photos, including an addition to my 52 week self portrait series.

Here I am pictured with Darren the Goat…

So great, Dave! I think Getty would also love your fish-eye animal portraits — i think they’d sell like hotcakes!! :)

    Grim January catch-up

Ahem, Moo?, originally uploaded by publicenergy.

January always strikes me as being a fairly grim month. I drive to work and come home in the dark, it’s cold (especially cold this year). I’ve taken very few photos during the month apart from a few rolls of film from Whitby earlier this month but I haven’t had chance to go through them properly yet.

More recently I had some pretty horrible toothache which started last Saturday and didn’t subside until Tuesday morning. I saw the dentist on Monday and had hoped that the pain would disappear more or less immediately. It didn’t. Between Saturday and Tuesday I got virtually no sleep at all. When the pain disappeared, the sleep I had was the most lovely welcome sleep I remember – complete bliss!

As well as being the day the toothache started, Saturday was also the day my car decided to die. When I got hold of this particular car around two years ago, I thought it’d be something that would tide me over and unlikely to last a long time – and that was reflected in it’s price. So when it eventually did die, it wasn’t that much of a surprise.

Thankfully the toothache is history and the car replacement is just about sorted out – something with better prospects for survival than my old one too.

I have a week off work in February, which is really my biggest break from work since last October because I worked between Christmas and New Year. I’m looking forward to the time off and will be able to get out and about and shake off that grim January feeling and take some photos and recharge my batteries.

The photo above was taken at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. They do have a lot of actual sculptures there, but to be honest, I found the cows more entertaining!

    Curiosity

After the Sheep Fair in Masham, we stopped off at Braymor Dairy – and right next to the ice cream shop is the cow shed. All of the adults were out in the fields, but the young ones remained indoors and seemed very happy for a bit of attention and fussing over.

The calf pictured above was in the best spot for getting attention – right in the corner near the door where people walked in. It’s handy that cows seem to love cameras – I had to clean mine up again after it got licked – but that curiousity also meant that in the two shots above, the cows were really trying to get the camera which I was holding a little further down the wall.

That is a damned near perfect photo. I mean talk about perfect timing with the vapour trails!

      Congratulations. It’s beautiful.

That is a cracking shot. But this cow obsession… When will it end?!

    Birmingham

    Over stepped

    It's behind you

I spent a day in Birmingham recently. The Selfridges building in the Bull Ring is probably one of the most photographed buildings in the country. I’ve seen it’s trademark knobbly bits on countless photos on Flickr, as such, it’s hard to take photos of it that aren’t just snapshots of it or repeats of the many good photos that exist already. I haven’t seen one like my top photo above, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been done.

The next photo was at the Think Tank. I took a number of photos there, but this is my favourite, and it’s just the back of a notice board – I liked the patterns in the dirty metal plates.

Finally, I couldn’t really leave this post without adding a photo like this could I! …

    I'm watching you boyo!

    Alstonefield Walk

I went for a walk on Sunday with some of my usual walking mates and we went from Alstonefield in a loop down the Manifold Valley and up Dove Dale. All in all we clocked up just over 14 miles – the first half was fairly relaxed with lots of photography going on, the second half was faster with less photos. The second half was faster because we’d managed to spend 5 hours doing the first half of the route so needed to be back before daylight deserted us. It gets dark pretty late at the moment so we made it back in good time, but in future I think we’re going to decide if it’s going to be a mainly photo type walk (under 10 miles, and taking time to take photos), or a longer walk where we just enjoy the scenery and do something that might go towards getting us fitter (well, me anyway).

I didn’t have much energy left by the time I got home so didn’t process many photos until the following day.

The editing above sprang to mind when I saw this sign – if I’m completely honest, my first title was a bit ruder, but this is a compromise I’m happy with!

    And finally, and inevitably…

There are a few more photos from the day in my Flickr set.
