    20 Golden Showers – Bubonique

    bubonique

I spotted this album again today after not hearing it for a few years. The album was a collaboration between Sean Hughes, the comedian and Cathal Coughlan who used to be in Fatima Mansions. The overall effect was to produce an album that was in parts funny, in parts quite good and in parts a lo-fi mess. It had an impact on me though when I bought it. There are still several
things on this album that have stuck in my brain and will probably
    never be forgotten.

After a quick search I discovered the album was available for download here. Note that the CD is a single 55 minute track, and the download is a single file as a result.

One thing that I should point out, is that when I originally went in to a record shop in Newark in the early 90’s and bought this, I was unaware what the title meant. I don’t recall if I had come to any of my own conclusions at the time – I just remember thinking the comedy wink on the cover was funny.

Highlights for me: Nice T doing Gangsta Rap about tea parties in Chigwell and Release the Bats -  a cover of a Birthday Party song, although, I don’t remember the lyric ‘Release the bats, those furry little creatures, release the bats with their translyvanian features’ in the version Nick Cave sang back in the day!

    The Dark Knight

I eventually got to see The Dark Knight yesterday at the BFI Imax in London. The first thing that struck me when I entered the auditorium was the sheer size of the screen. I mean, I knew Imax screens were big, but this was just mind blowingly big – about 25 metres tall by all accounts which makes it the biggest in the country.

Size isn’t everything of course – the film itself looked lovely. Several sections had been filmed for Imax and the quality of these stuck out hugely. During those scenes, even though the screen was huge, you could see all sorts of tiny details all over the place. It would have been nice if the entire film had been done that way, but the film stands on it’s own merits so I can’t really grumble about that. The Joker character played be the late Heath Ledger was great. That character could have so easily been a one dimensional over-played caricature, but he came across as a genuine and believable loony-tune/psychotic criminal genius which has got to be difficult to do!

    Change

Dealing with all of the technical aspects of maintaining a blog is fairly tedious. Having to make sure things are backed up, security updates applied, patches to plugins installed and things like that. All of this kind of thing is too much like the day job to be enjoyable. So I’ve moved to somewhere which is effectively a magic box that does all of that kind of thing for you.

At the moment, things look a bit barren, and a lot of the entries from the old place have missing images, but I’ll tidy things up and move things around as I go along.

I’m planning on posting several galleries of images here, as well as post more entries rather than sticking to notes that accompany a few photos.

And the newsfeed didn’t break. Enjoy your new home. Are you keeping these carpets and curtains or decorating throughout?

I think I’ll be decorating at some point – after bedding in and getting used to things. I need to get a number of other pages up so that there’s plenty of stuff there to test with other than just posts.

I really like it. What did you use?

rather cheesed off with WordPress myself: too many upgrades are wanted, and they don’t support the older versions. I have been vociferously warned off Drupal, but might go back to MT or even Typepad. I really like your galleries here. Good stuff.

@brendadada – I’m using Squarespace. So far, it’s very easy and pleasant to use – I’m having a few problems with the gallery upload of individual images but the support people are quick to reply and are trying to sort it out for me.

I didn’t really have any problem with WordPress as such, I quite liked it really, but having to update it seems like work! I have had a play with MT in the past, but I found that much more difficult to install and maintain (I remember lots of mucking about with cgi-bin folders and files) – so if you have a play, install it somewhere out of the way first as a test! I did have a brief trail run with Typepad too, but it seemed very restrictive with a fairly ugly set of default templates to use as starting points.

Typepad and Squarespace aren’t free of course, but then you’re not paying for hosting as a separate service, so it all depends on what value you put on it. You can get free trial periods at Typepad and Squarespace so you can have a play anyway without having to dive straight in.

    Malham and Gordale Scar

    Malham Cove

In the summer of 2005, I went for a walk from Malham in Yorkshire to Malham Tarn and then on to Gordale Scar. Along the section from Malham Tarn to Gordale Scar I met numerous people and the ones who stopped to chat said that they thought I was doing it the hard way. I had previously seen a sign that said difficult descent but thought that the path I was on was that difficult descent! When I got to Gordale Scar itself, the walking instruction “descend through waterfall” revealled itself to be somewhat difficult. I stood on a rock and leaned over as far as I could while remaining safe and I just couldn’t see a way down through the waterfall. So, I turned back and took an alternative route.

On Sunday I was back there, doing more or less the same route but in reverse. So going up Gordale Scar was early in the day. When we got there this time, the rivers leading to it were full to overflowing. We had walked past Janet’s Foss which one of my mates said was just a trickle the last time he saw it – this time it was a raging torent! When we arrived at Gordale Scar, it had a huge amount of water coming down it – lots of clouds of spray and the route up it seemed to be engulfed in it all. So, it was diversion time again. Maybe one day I’ll get there where there in a dry spell and it’ll be ok!

    Yorkshire Weather 1 – Sign 0

The sign above was near the very exposed Malham Tarn. There were trees planted here with their own dry stone walls encircling them to give them a start in life protected from the wind. This sign seems to have been on the receiving end of the wind and rain up there – it seems to have selectively blown off parts of the Settle wording too!

    Gordale Scar

If there wasn’t so much water coming down there, you could in theory go straight up the middle of that. I really didn’t fancy it with that much water coming down with so much power though!

    Horses

A pair of happy horsesI managed to get out for two nice walks at the weekend. Not much in the way of cows to photograph, but that was compensated for by a number of horses who were all up for having their photo taken in exchange for a little stroking of the nose and general fussing over.

The Devil Horse and RickA Flickr contact left a comment on one of these photos to say that ears pointing forward is the sign of a happy horse. I did a quick check of my photos tagged with horse and sure enough, lots of ears pointing forward which was nice. When I’m photographing animals, I try and be relaxed around them and make them feel at ease. If they’re happy and relaxed they usually stick around and give you plenty of opportunity to take photos. Horses are generally very relaxed and seem to love the attention. Each of the horses in these photographs had a field to explore, but instead they were at the edge near junctions where people were sure to pass. On Sunday, the two horses pictured above were at a footpath junction and we stayed there a while with them. Later when we ascended Bramah Edge and stopped for lunch, we could see these horses in the distance with another set of people in the path fussing over them.

This final photograph was taken after I had been stroking the horse and it really seemed to enjoy it – it looked like it could have fallen asleep. When I stopped to take a photo, it yawned and it took me by surprise. It reminded me of the scene in Alien where the alien erupts from the person! So, a little more nose stroking and I was ready the second time it yawned…

I shall attempt to eat the carrot… vertically!

Lol! Superb shots Dave. I’d pay good money to see images like that :)

Erect ears = happy horse. :)

That last photo shown above looks pretty scary though… You wouldn’t want to get your hand trapped in there.
