Channel 4 – Picture This
On Sunday night at 7pm, Channel 4 will broadcast the first programme in a series called Picture This in which 6 up and coming photographers are followed as they complete projects. I’ve not seen any previews of the actual programme, but I’ll definitely watch the first one to see what it’s like.
To accompany the TV programme there is a web site where you can participate in various projects – some web only, and some the same as the people in the programme are doing. Comments are encouraged and the site seems geared up so that you can post new versions of photographs based on the feedback left by other users.
Usefully, the site uses Flickr, so you just have to log in to Flickr and give permission to allow you to pick photos from your Flickr stream to participate in the projects.
Only last night I posted my initial list of photographic to-dos for 2008 and I’ve added to it already by deciding to have a go at these projects alongside the programme.
Update: The Picture This web site seems to have been unavailable for most of the day.

OK well photography is very subjective, but after 2 of the 3 programmes, I think they’ve thrown out the wrong people. As previously mentioned, Jay’s stuff stood out-the guy clearly has an eye, a point picked up on by the photographic advisor, but ignored by the judges. I feel for Ed, who, as the judges said, did everything that was asked of him and still got binned. Did you notice he dressed appropriately for his various assignments too? OK, this might not have any bearing on his ability, but for some pro snappers, this is crucial. I agree with Liz going through, but don’t think Lucinda knows how to hold an SLR properly, and her polo picture looked out of focus to me. As for Aron, I’m sorry but rummaging about for bluetac and bits of paper on which to write unfunny and borderline offensive fifth form slogans has nothing to do with photography-contrived and lacking in creativity.
Personally, my final two should have come from Liz, Ed and Jay.

I feel that Ed should have gone through, I think he was penalized because of his MA in photojournalism but in the competition I think all the contestants should be judged at face value. I liked Lucinda’s polo shots. I looked at her website and pretty much all of her work is shot on Medium/large format on film rather than digital SLR. I don’t know if maybe the camera was unfamiliar to her? All the contestants seem to be shooting on the same brand of Nikon. Saying this, it is a digital photography competition after all.
